2026 STAT: Survey Tips and Tactics 2026 – Infection Control Surveillance

Discover how nursing homes are being cited with their annual surveys. The Long-Term Care Survey Process and regulatory language will be reviewed. Each month will delve into a specific survey topic. Common citation examples will be given with interactive discussion from members sharing their survey experiences, best practices, and lessons learned.  Obtain useful tips and tactics for the monthly highlighted topic. Resources and other reference material will be shared.

Infection control surveillance is a foundational component of a facility’s Infection Prevention and Control Program (IPCP) and a critical element surveyed under F880. Effective surveillance allows facilities to identify trends, detect outbreaks early, and ensure prompt implementation of control measures to protect residents and staff. Surveyors frequently cite facilities for incomplete, inconsistent, or reactive surveillance processes that fail to capture key data or drive timely interventions. This session will outline CMS expectations for conducting active, ongoing surveillance; review common gaps that lead to citations; and discuss practical tools infection preventionists can use to track, analyze, and respond to infection risks. Participants will learn how to strengthen their surveillance system to support compliance, reduce infection rates, and demonstrate an effective IPCP during survey.
